CHAPTER 2
DISCLAIMER- I DO NOT OWN the Harry Potter series.
Just as soon as the last treacle tart was wiped clean from the table, the prefects started to take the lead by calling out to their houses, asking the 1st years follow them to the house common room. The anxiety was gone from the 1st year’s faces and was replaced by an eager glow as they rushed forwards towards the prefect, ready to start their Hogwarts adventures.
“First year Slytherin students will line up in the front please and not wander off.” Tom called out in his firm clear voice. Almost every newly recruited Slytherin girl pushed their way to the front and stood there gazing up at the handsome prefect and sighed dreamily. Tom flashed his signature smile at them and they started squealing and blushing while the boys who were standing behind the girls, glared hard at their prefect.
Claire had shot up from her seat and quickly made her way towards the Slytherin table, in search of her sister. “Hey Gryffindor, get lost!” a few called. “Wrong table, Noire! The looser table is over there in the corner!” Olive Hornby sniggered. “Don’t come near us! You will infect us with the Gryffindor insane virus!” A few girls called out then giggled, proud at their joke. Claire hardly paid any attention to them and her eyes kept on searching for her sister. She was standing amongst a group of 1st year Slytherin girls who were eagerly listening to what Tom Riddle was saying.
“Pardon us for a moment!” Claire said and pulled her sister away.
Yvonne looked up at her sister relieved. “You said I would be in Hufflepuff! Why am I in Slytherin?” she asked tensed.
“Hey do I look like the one in-charge of Hogwarts’s decisions? Claire snapped, “They probably made a mistake!”
“Well can you do something? Can you talk to the headmaster and ask him to change my house?” Yvonne asked.
“Dippet’s useless. He won’t listen. He will say that the Sorting Hat’s decision is final and he cannot change it.” Claire said. “But I could talk to Dumbledore… He may listen and try to persuade Dippet.” She said frowning and biting her lower lip. The action she always did when she was thinking very hard.
The sound of someone clearing their throat made both the sisters turn around and they saw Tom standing there, looking at them with a hard suspicious look.
“Miss Noire, I am sure this is not your house and I would request you to leave and join your house as they are waiting for you.” Tom said.
Claire’s eyes darted towards the Gryffindor table where indeed everyone was waiting. Her best friend Ava Bailey, the Gryffindor prefect caught her eye and she motioned her to join them. Claire nodded towards Ava then turned back to face Tom.
“Sorry. I needed to speak to my sister.” She explained to him and he continued to stare at her with his cold eyes. “I will see what I can do, okay. You sleep tight… I will see you tomorrow.” Claire said hugging Yvonne who hugged back and then she quickly walked away.
“Miss Noire, I suggest you go back and join the line.” Tom said looking at Yvonne who nodded vigorously, her eyes wide with fright and quickly joined her line.
After finishing her prefect duties, Ava Bailey, made her way towards her dormitories, exhausted. Settling in the first years was a really tough job. Ava was regarded as one of Hogwarts’s beauties with her long sleek straight platinum blonde hair and doe like blue eyes. She was tall, slim and intelligent. She was also the best friend of Claire de Rose Noire, who was also considered to be one of Hogwarts’s beauties. Claire was waiting on top of the stairs and in front of the dormitories for Ava. They had been best friends since their 1st year and were each-other’s secret dairy.
“So what are you going to do?” Ava asked Claire when she reached the top of the stairs.
“I think I will talk to Dumbledore about it… Yvonne can’t stay there. The Slytherins know that she is the sister of Gryffindor and they will make her life a living hell.” Claire replied.
“True… The girls will pick on her. Older ones as well. I am sure Hornby will attack her just to get to you. Do you want me to go with you to Dumbledore?” Ava asked.
“No, I will do it on my own. I suppose you won’t let me out now?” Claire said giving Ava her most mischievous smile.
Ava laughed, “Not unless you want to get us both in trouble! My badge will be taken away if the teachers knew I allowed you to go out after the curfew.”
“Yeah I know. I won’t sneak out at night, so you can sleep peacefully.” Claire said and gave a very innocent smile.
“Sleep peacefully with you in the room? Hilarious.” Ava said rolling her eyes and both the girls went inside the dormitories.
Yvonne was sitting on her bed listening to what her room-mates were saying. “My daddy made sure I would be well taken of here, you know. He even sent a house-elf here for me who will make sure no one poisons my food.” Alexandra Belstrode said.
“Oh that sounds so lovely! I wish my daddy did the same!” complained Alicia Jones and looked at Yvonne. “What about you?” she asked.
“Uh… What about me?” Yvonne asked looking around the room to see everyone looking at her.
“Are you a pureblood?” Alicia asked, scoffing. “Yes.” Yvonne replied. “Well good night, it’s quite late and I am tired.”
“Good night.” The other girls said and hopped on their beds as well.
The next day, every student was ready to take on their first day at Hogwarts. They got up early, dressed quickly and then rushed to the great hall for breakfast. Claire was waiting for Yvonne outside the great hall and she spotted her soon. Yvonne was on her way to the great hall by herself when she noticed Claire standing at the entrance door, looking at her. A smile lit up their faces as their eyes met and Yvonne’s pace quickened as she walked towards her sister.
“Hey! Did you sleep well? Did anyone bother you?” Claire asked.
“No, they hardly noticed me and I don’t mind it. They talked like 20 year-old girls!” Yvonne said. “You will talk to someone today, right?”
“Yes, I am going to talk to professor Dumbledore now. You go on ahead and eat your breakfast.” Claire said and Yvonne nodded.
“I will write a letter to Mum…” Yvonne mumbled and walked away.
As soon as Yvonne walked away, Claire hastened towards Dumbledore’s office. He usually was late during breakfast and Claire was determined to meet him before he locked his office and went away.
Dumbledore was coming out of his office when Claire intercepted him.
“Professor, I need to talk to you it is urgent, sir!” Claire said a bit breathless.
“Goodness Miss Noire, whatever is the matter?” the professor asked his twinkling blue eyes held worry.
“Well nothing too alarming now…but I fear it may become alarming soon.” Claire said.
“Come into my office, my child.”Dumbledore said and re-opened his office and let Claire walk in first.
“Now…What troubles you?” he asked.
“My sister, sir. The sorting hat placed her in Slytherin! Sir, that is wrong! You know how the students of that house will treat her knowing that she is a Gryffindor student’s sister. Olive Hornby and her hang will probably torture her like the way they do to Myrtle. Olive will target her because she hates me. She apparently hates everyone!” Claire said at length.
“My dear, I think you are exaggerating a bit too much. I am sure your sister will be fine and there are prefects who I am sure will help her if she is in trouble.” Dumbledore said.
“Sir I doubt it… Yvonne is a quiet girl who hardly discusses her problems… Sir you need to put her in a different house. She wont survive there!” Claire cried, desperate.
“Your concern for your sister is heart warming, Miss Noire but I think you know I do not have such powers here in this school.” Dumbledore said.
“Sir could you not persuade Headmaster Dippet?” Claire asked.
“I am sure the Headmaster will not be persuaded in these matters. Miss Noire, the Sorting Hat’s decisions are final and you know it. I am sorry but I don’t think I can help you here.” Dumbledore said.
Claire sighed, “I understand. Thank you sir.”she said and turned to walk away.
“Look at this situation this way, Miss Noire; Maybe somethings happen for a reason.” Dumbledore said.
Claire turned to look at the professor one last time. His blue eyes held an unusual glint in them. She turned and walked out of his office.
